Comoros - Private adviser to the president  Nour EL Fath Azali

About

Nour El Fath Azali is an adviser to his father, Assoumani Azali, the president of the Union of Comoros. Assoumani Azali came to power in a military coup in 1999, and first served as president from 2002 to 2006. He was re-elected in 2016 and again in 2019, in a vote that opposition leaders claimed was fraudulent.

Nour Azali, who earned an MBA at Brandeis University, worked as a consultant and bank auditor, before joining his father’s administration.

He participates in meetings with senior Comoronian officials, including the president’s chief of staff. In 2020, he took part in high-level talks between Comoros and the United Arab Emirates, which is an increasingly important economic donor to the island nation.

Comorian media have floated Nour Azali as a future president, noting a history of nepotism in national politics.

Leaked Details in the Pandora Papers

Nour Azali owns Olifants Ltd., a company created in the United Arab Emirates. The Pandora Papers do not reveal the company’s purpose, but show it received invoices in 2018 and 2019, when Azali became an adviser to his father.

In an interview with ICIJ’s Comorian media partner, Azali said he created the company before entering politics. Olifants Ltd. was intended to offer consulting and advisory services, Azali said, but he closed it in 2019 and the company never had any business. “The UAE is the center of the world,” Azali said, explaining his choice of jurisdiction.
